Yellow Birthday Cake With Caramel Frosting
I celebrated a birthday last week – and it was one of the best birthdays ever. No, I did not take a luxury cruise, nor did I have lunch with Ryan Gosling. I spent my birthday week in Kentucky with my family. The best part of it all was that Howie flew in from CA and Jael flew in from NY to be with me for the weekend. I cannot remember the last time I was with my husband, daughter, and extended family to celebrate my day. It was perfect!
Being together with everyone was all the birthday gift I needed. However, I did have one special request to make the celebration feel complete. A homemade birthday cake. When it comes to celebrating my birthday – keep the gifts – however, cake is a must. I am very lucky in life and there isn’t any thing that could make my day any more meaningful than being with family. That said, there is something that could make it more delicious. CAKE! A Yellow Cake with Caramel Frosting to be specific. Jael and Howie shared the effort with Howie baking the cake layers, and Jael masterfully frosting them. All along the way I was close by with my camera capturing the love I felt as they worked together to grant my birthday cake wish.
As much as I wanted a homemade cake, I didn’t want them spending a lot of time in the kitchen. The weather was beautiful and we had so many things we wanted to do – like – shopping for antiques in Louisville; a ride in the country for lunch and a visit to one of my favorite chocolate shops; and just hanging out with family. So this post isn’t about a stellar cake recipe that you absolutely must make. What this post is about is how loved I felt by my husband and daughter and how, no matter what your age, a cake can make us feel special and celebrated. And I did!
Although this cake starts with a boxed mix, it results in a tender and delicate yellow cake. The recipe is from the Cake Mix Doctor, and you can find it here. The frosting – well – we did a quick Google search and picked the first Caramel Frosting recipe that came up. Simple and sweet. Together, they fulfilled my every birthday cake expectation.
To any husbands who might stumble across this blog, I highly recommend spending a little time making one’s wife feel cherished. Cake is just the trick !
Happy Birthday Mary…. I’m sure you’ve come to celebrate each and every one of them the same way I have. You know what I am talking about. To Howie and Jael… bravo! Now, will you come to my house in November and bake me a birthday cake?
Love Lori
Yes Lori, birthdays – and every day, is a gift. I count each one precious!
Happy birthday Mary! I completely agree about a homemade birthday cake. And it is more special when you don’t have to bake it yourself. My mom always made me an angel food cake with fresh orange frosting. Year after year. Now that she is gone, I so miss that tradition. It was so special. And I loved her for it. Sweet memories. Being with family is the best gift! Sounds like you had a wonderful day!
Being so health conscious, I don’t bake much (although I love to). I just may have to bake a cake.
Thanks, Sally! I had a wonderful and delicious birthday!!
Happy birthday! A homemade birthday cake is so much better than store bought. I cherish the time and intention that went into the creation. My mom made me apple strudel for my birthday, until her arthritic hands we unable to bend to the task. It was my favorite childhood dessert. Now I take her dessert on my birthday! She adores it!
Deb, I love apple strudel. Do you have a recipe you are willing to share? I would love to make one for a family dinner we will be attending next weekend. Thanks!
So can I drop a hint about upcoming birthdays? Sally’s cake sounds yummy. Just sayin’……..
I would love to make you a birthday cake, however, here’s a hint for you. Your niece makes a killer angel food cake. I’m just sayin……
