Winter Jam Shortcakes

Winter Jam Shortcakes RecipeWith daffodils popping through the moist cool ground and the confines of hibernation melting away with warming temps, I feel a little giddy with  the anticipation of Spring.  March struggles to catch its bearings, finding itself in a weather tug-of-war, one foot lingering in winter and the other eager for Spring.  We wait and watch for indications that Winter has gone to bed for yet another year; that it is safe to pack away the coats, scarves, and gloves.  I find myself in my own tug-of-war between leaving behind the slower, reclusive life of Winter, and the birth and awakening of a new season.  I am anxious to feel the soil between my fingers as I place new plants in my flower beds.  I will soon be able to pull the covers off abandoned patio furniture and welcome J home from New York to the warmer climate of Southern California.  Most of all, my taste buds are beginning to stir for the long awaited Spring fruits and vegetables at the farmers market and the possibilites they hold for new recipes. Ginger Spiced Upside-Down Pear Cake

Ginger Spiced Upside-Down Pear Cake RecipeMy fruit is the PEAR.  That’s right.  I was once told by an Ayurvedic physician that the fruit best suited to me is a pear.  I was pretty happy with that assessment, and in many ways it seemed right.  Ayurvedic medicine aside, ever since then I have considered pears to be MY official fruit. Happy Birthday Sifting Focus and Cinnamon-Scented Devil’s Food Cupcakes

Cinnamon Scented Devil's Food Cupcakes RecipeMy heart swells with gratitude as Sifting Focus turns “1”.  You, my readers, have offered up such kind words of encouragement during this past year.   Your thoughtful comments make the sharing of this personal baking journal all the more meaningful.  I have learned much in so many different areas of blogging, and growth feels wonderful.  I have definitely faced some challenges, mostly in the area of technology.  Baking comes naturally to me  – Facebook and Twitter – not so much.  It seems silly not to have thought of this earlier, but I was months into blogging before I realized what a wonderful gift I am creating for J.  Just as a hand stitched quilt becomes an heirloom for future generations, through recipes, words, and photography I am creating a baking legacy for my daughter.  If for no other reason, that makes it all worthwhile. Chocolate Cake with Salty Hazelnut Brittle and Mocha Buttercream

Chocolate Cake with Salty Hazelnut Brittle RecipeDespite my best efforts to nibble away at a collection of recently acquired cookbooks, the stack stands tall enough to function as an end table in my living room.  I actually read my cookbooks, which when I share this tidbit of information with certain people, their faces kind of screw up into this look of part confusion and part disbelief.  Give a person who is passionate about food a cookbook, and they will devour it from cover to cover.  It’s not just about the recipes and photos alone.   Actually , some of my favorites are the ones that have no photos at all.  They are the books that transport me to a time long ago or on a journey to distant places that I may never have the opportunity to experience any other way.  In actuality,  I’m not all that particular.  If it’s a book and it’s about food, especially baking, it garners my attention. Blood Orange Baby Pound Cakes

Blood Orange Pound Cake Baby Cakes RecipeWho can resist the intensely colored ruby red juice of a blood orange.  I remain amazed at the depth and array of color that nature provides us.  The juice from a blood orange not only prods me toward the kitchen to bake up a sweet and citrusy recipe, but it also rouses the artist in me and the urge to paint.  What a vibrant water color the juice of a blood orange would make.
