Chocolate Curry Coconut Ice Cream and Coconut Shortbread Cookies

I must apologize for my absence from my blog.  All good things have taken me away for the past couple of weeks.  I have been traveling and spending time with my family. I spent a week in Santa Rosa, California, with my sister-in-law, brother-in-law and my niece and nephew.  Much of the family joined us over the Memorial Day weekend to celebrate three BIG birthdays and one eighth grade graduation.  But I will write more about that later and include lots of photos of all the adventures I had and the delicious food I ate. Apricot-Berry Upside-Down Cake

"Apricot-Berry Upside-Down Cake"

Stone fruit season has arrived in Southern California.  Oh My!  My friend Ann and I ventured to the farmer’s market today and found ourselves surrounded by vendors selling the first of the season cherries, apriums, apricots, nectarines, plums, and more.  My tongue came alive and my mouth literally watered at the vivid and tantalizing colors dancing before my eyes; the blush and marigold yellow of the apricots; the peachy pink to deep red of the sweet cherries; and the fandango purple of the early season plums.  Free samples are offered generously by most growers so it didn’t take long for my tummy to fill and my arms to weigh heavily with fresh produce. Sun-dried Tomato and Sausage Scones

"Sun-dried Tomato and Sausage Scones"

I have a ritual I go through whenever I purchase (or rescue) a new “second hand” piece of furniture.   First, I find just the right space in my home for it to settle into.  Sometimes it needs a bit of a freshening up – maybe a coat of paint or new drawer pulls.  I lovingly clean it, and depending on what piece of furniture it is, I fill its shelves with china, or line its drawers with scented paper.  I view it as an adoption of sorts.  More than likely, it belonged to another family in its former life and now it is left in my care.  These new “members” of my family arrive without papers or any identifying information as to who owned them prior to ending up at the flee market or the local resale shop.  Once comfortable in its new space – a space filled with many other orphans – I assign it a story.  Imagining who loved this piece of furniture before me, I conjure up imagery of newlyweds buying their first bedroom set, or a farmer who made due with found wood to build his family a kitchen table.  I wonder about what route it took to my home;  how much of the country –  or maybe even the world – it has seen. Cherry-Almond Coffee Cake

"Cherry-Almond Coffee Cake"

Have you ever been convinced – absolutely sure – that something is going to go one way just to find out you were wrong?  That’s what happened the morning I made this coffee cake.  I have had this recipe snipped from a magazine for months and months.  It resided on the top of my “must make” list but somehow continued to get overlooked as I moved onto this pudding, or that cake. Lemon Pudding Cakes – Happy Birthday Sweet Girl

"Delicious Lemon Pudding Cakes with Raspberry Whipped Cream"

Today is a bit of an odd day; peculiar to say the least.  My Sweet Girl – my only Girl- my only child – turns “21“!  The thing that is making it so strange is that she is 3000 miles away from me today.  Something seems so off about the fact that I have spent 21 years raising her, marking every milestone along the way, but today, on one of the most memorable of life’s occasions, I cannot be with her to celebrate.  To be honest, it feels a bit unfair.  (Picture a very pouting mother.)
